Why we built Our Maui

Maui is changing fast. Home prices have outrun local wages, families are leaving for the mainland, the recovery in Lahaina is slow, and basic things, seeing a doctor, getting to work after a storm, keeping the power on, are harder than they used to be.

There is no shortage of opinions about all of this. What’s harder to find is a single place that lays out what’s actually happening, where the numbers come from, and why it matters, without spin and without assuming you already know the jargon.

That’s what this site is for. Every figure links to its source. Every issue gets the same treatment: what’s happening, why, and what the people in charge have said about it. If we get something wrong, tell us, and we’ll fix it.
